Canon: Bungo Stray Dogs; S3 END/End of the 'Cannibalism' Arc
Age: 20
Background Information: Wiki
Personality: Akutagawa has had to live his life in a dog-eat-dog world to survive, and that level of strength defines him as a person and what he expects from others. Born in the poorest area of Yokohama as an orphan alongside his younger sister Gin, he's more or less considered the world against him from the start, which makes his viewpoint inherently cynical. He prefers actions as opposed to words, but will do what he needs to to get by - or what he thinks he needs to, at least. He's more intelligent than some would think, but this can be dwarfed by his temper and impulsiveness, leading to his tendency of actions-instead-of-words to ruin some relationships, understandably. Not that he cares, or if he does, that he'll admit to caring. Akutagawa's loyalty is hard-earned: for those who gain it, he is unshakable, but for those who he sees as unworthy, he will barely give them the time of day.
The person Akutagawa is loyal to moreso than anyone else is Osamu Dazai. The man who Akutagawa sees as having saved his life, having improved himself as an individual, having changed everything: his complex about Dazai is near messiah-like in some regards, and though he will accept his mentor has flaws, he'll never accept that he's better than him. Not yet. Perhaps not ever. Despite Dazai's apparent apathy or perhaps even disgust towards Akutagawa's entire existence, Akutagawa will not let this idealized perception of the man fade from his worldview: it's unhealthy, but it's undoubtably something that drives him. Just as Dazai intended it might. To grow as a person, Akutagawa would have to let go of this perception - but will he, ever?
In relation to Akutagawa's flaws and Dazai-worship is his insatiable envy. If Akutagawa sees someone as better than him, he is immediately compelled to push himself harder and harder despite his constitution and to hold a grudge against them: even if this rivalry is one-sided, he will treat anyone he sees as a threat to his position as Dazai's star disciple or anyone he sees as 'better than him' as absolute scum. This is shown best with Dazai's actual favorite pupil and his biggest rival, Atsushi Nakajima. The two loathe each other with a passion for their ideals, though they work better together than some might think. This shows despite it all, Akutagawa has respect for his rivals - and those he thinks deserve it.
Atsushi has had an impact on Akutagawa in major ways: loathe be him to admit it, but the weretiger has made him grow from a cold, vindictive killer with nothing else on his mind to someone who - however temporarily - has taken up a promise not to kill in exchange for a fight with him in return.
He speaks in an eloquent way. Despite growing up in the slums, Akutagawa was taken in by the Port Mafia as a child and raised to be able to make an impression at the events he's required to, despite his disdain for doing so. He speaks with a very eloquent precision and opts to use more formal language as opposed to anything simple or crass. He's out of place with more casual activities - even something like a trip to the arcade might have him looking a bit odd - but the guy dresses like a classic vampire, speaks eloquently, and his biggest hobby is collecting antiques: certain things are just not his scene.
Akutagawa struggles with a weak constitution. His life in the slums has blackened his lungs, making his temper more of a threat to him than one might think - if he overexerts himself, he may collapse into a coughing fit. It's unknown how long he has to live, but given his lifestyle and the severe condition he finds himself in regularly, it's safe to assume a lot of his survival is based on a very unnatural luck factor. He, again, won't admit this, either. On a more slightly-amusing health issue, he often struggles with taking baths since his ability, Rashomon, is based on his control of clothing. Naked, he's defenseless, so he shies away from taking baths or showers until he absolutely has to.
At the very end of it all, though, he's a very lonely individual. Akutagawa has a deep sadness dwelling within him, and he hasn't known much unconditional love in his lifetime. He's known as the 'Feral Dog of the Mafia', and some of his mannerisms show that very well: he's very territorial, he's liable to snap, but he has a loyal heart and at his core, he needs people to understand him and to work with him how he is to reach a point where he can react to others with care. It's difficult, but he's slowly learning the world may not be as dark a place as he was informed it was.
Abilities & Inventory: Akutagawa is coming with the clothes on his back and nothing else...but that's more important than you might think. Rashomon, Akutagawa's main ability, is defined in-series as a beast that consumes everything - but it's specifically a beast that consumes everything made from Akutagawa's jacket. Rashomon is the control of clothing on Akutagawa's body, and he makes best usage of this with the long coat he wears. Using this ability, he can form the back of it into a doglike beast that can consume space and time itself with its powerful jaws. This can also be attempted with other pieces of clothing, but the effectiveness of it depends on the length and his familarity with it, and his coat is something he's trained with a long while. He's created several 'types' or 'forms' based on his ability, all of which he has named, but his primary is 'Agito', which forms the beast into a set of clamping jaws to bite the target.
Rashomon can also cause a bit of spacial distortion - if he knows they're coming, Rashomon can devour the space around, say, incoming bullets to eat them and the space they contain. He can also use Rashomon for more mundane tasks such as a cast for a wound or to simply slice things open. It can, however, be nullified by ability-nullifying abilities, depends on Akutagawa's energy to maintain, depends on Akutagawa's timing and creativity to get right, and also depends on his clothing at the time.
Suitability & Plans: Akutagawa is in the middle of his character journey, development-wise, so this makes him an ideal candidate to be put into a game. Within a new location with less ire held over his head - his criminal past doesn't mean as much here - he has more opportunity to build a wider social circle and open up. My idea with Akutagawa is to take him out of his home environment and see how that changes him. Yokohama is a place that has not been kind to Akutagawa and has shaped his view for the worse, so seeing others outside of his home dimension may help him. Plus, it's just inherently funny if there are silly situations for him to be put into them since he's usually so dead serious unless he gets sarcastic or sardonic. He's an interesting character that could go in so many ways based on his development and I'd like to see how that shapes him. He's also inherently independent, so he'll naturally do what he wants no matter what...but he's also compelled enough by fear of missing out that he'll be drawn into chaos regardless.
